We all go to sleep eventually but how much rest do we actually get – do we get our full potential of sleep? Does our brain fully shut down? Do we experience the peacefulness of a deep sleep? There are tons of sleeping aids available but sometimes those make us more tired, groggy, strung out, and exhausted. So, keeping all that in mind – here are 5 tips to help you get in that sleepy mind set!
No Electronics – Turn off your TV, phones, iPads, etc., and put it all away. Did you know that the light from the screen at night time especially can trick your mind into thinking it’s daytime and actually interrupt and ruin your sleep? A lot of people tend to use their phone right in bed to play their favourite games likes Candy Crush but it’s a BIG no.
Cup of Chamomile Tea – Herbal teas are excellent for helping with sleep. Chamomile tea in particular is a Godsend. Researchers believe that its effect on sleep comes from its flavonoid content. Apigenin is a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, which has a sedative effect. Chamomile to the rescue, once again.
Nighttime Yoga – Practicing yoga regularly can help you to manage symptoms of insomnia. You might be able to fall asleep quicker; sleep for longer, and go back to sleep after waking up at night. Researchers say that the effectiveness of yoga in treating insomnia and promoting better sleep is huge. Get your pose on, Queens.
Quick Skincare – Cleansing your skin at night will avoid bacteria from spreading and causing acne. The skin also repairs itself at night, removing your makeup and washing your face is a necessity for keeping your skin healthy. It requires discipline to keep up your nighttime skincare routine, but it is SO worth it.
Good Book – Take sometime before sleep and open a good book that you’ve been meaning to get for weeks. This will not only help soothe and relax you, but a good book is excellent for the mind and spirit, plus it’ll keep you away from the electronics. According to a study done in 2021, 42% of the participants found that their sleep improved after reading every night before bed.
