Calendula - The Flower of my Obsession & Your Best Skin

If you know me, and you know me well, you would know that natural skincare isn’t just something I talk about or dabble in, it’s something I obsess over. One of my favourite ingredients in my products is Calendula. It’s a flower with so many great benefits, that I kind of used it…everywhere. You’ll find it in my fountain of youth oil, the rose blossom face cream, the soothing botanical face toner, skin SOS, and the sweet sensation. (*laughs out lout* Told you, everywhere!)

Let’s get down to it. Calendula is a member of the daisy family called Asteraceae. It has been used on and off for centuries as a medicinal as it possesses anti-inflammatory properties. It is also very effective when used topically on skin for more than in a minute. It gets its’ name from the word Kalendae, which in Latin means new moon or the first day of every month. It is believed that the bright yellow and orange perennial only bloom on the first of the month.

Here are the benefits:

  1. It’s an anti-inflammatory: inflammation can cause breakouts, rosacea, eczema, sensitivity, and a breakdown of collagen. These skin conditions can benefit from calendula’s soothing effects. It possesses a potent dose of flavonoid, saponins, and triterpenoids which give the flower the ability to prevent a release of histamines which can cause redness, pain, and other reactions.
  2. Moisturizing benefits: The linoleic acid in calendula oil or extract can really nourish your skin. They give your skin cells the ability to absorb nutrients and hold onto water longer – great for dry skin.
  3. Protects your skin: The same flavonoids that give the ability to soothe skin can also protect it. Flavonoids function as a powerful antioxidant, which helps protect your skin against free radical damage. This can also decrease premature aging such as wrinkles and fine lines.
  4. Keeps your skin healthy: Calendula has been the go-to ingredient for wound healing, in fact, it can decrease the healing time for C-section scars. Women that were treated with calendula ointment reported their incisions were less swollen and red than those receiving standard hospital treatment. The healing properties come from calendula’s ability to increase blood flow and oxygen to the skin.
  5. Firms up your skin: In a short-term run, the nourishing benefits of calendula help plump the surface of your skin, giving it a tighter, more supple look. In the long term – both the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help protect your skin’s collagen and elastin supply.

Check out any number of our products mentioned to enjoy the benefits of calendula. Keep your skin amazing!

Sincerely,

Ruba
